The Indori Food Dictionary that India finds weird & Funny

You might have heard lot about Indore’s Exclusive Word Dictionary with so many desi words which starts right from A and endlessly you will be finding so many hilarious words till you reach Z.  But here IndoreHD brings you an interesting & weird take on Indore’s food dictionary compared to India’s Food Dictionary.

Dilli se gayee Mumbai… Mumbai se gayee patna… but could not find the food as Indore refers them. ऐसा कॉम्बो सिर्फ “इंदौर” में मिलेगा …

Tensi ( टेन्सी )

The world called it apple gourd; Indians called it baby pumpkin and “tinde” in hindi, respectably.  But anyone’s first response as a new citizen to Indore may rather predict the commonly used word tensi for the vegetable as somebody’s nick name, with all due respect once again!

Pettise ( पेटिस )

This is another interesting one to add to our food dictionary. A coconut filled bread roll that is sauced with green and tamarind chutney is what we interestingly call to be a Pettise in Indore rather using the conventional term.

Shikanji ( शिकंजी )

No, no, no, no… It’s not what you are thinking. Listening to the word “shikanji” might have you picture a glass of fresh lime or soda, but when in Indore it’s just the opposite. Try picturing the yummy-tummy skimmed milk drink that would rather need a real shikanji to be digested afterwards.

Hot-dog ( हॉट डॉग )

America came up with this acerbic term to the long and slender buns containing the hot-dog or the cylindrical fried cutlet inside. Indorians understood it as a pao bread and aloo cutlet served with the relishing combination of chutney and onion slices.

Jhannat ( झन्नाट )

The all time utilized term by people of Indore as there would be no good food if it could not make you smack Jhannat after having it. Spicy-sizzling-smoky, all in one is wrapped in the Indore’s euphemism Jhannat!

Baked Samosa ( बेक्ड समोसा )

To what the entire India name as Pettise, which has already been taken by the formerly mentioned bread roll, and at some parts may refer to it as Puffs, Indore has its special designation. We have the fried version as samosa and the oven treated as baked samosa.

Which other food items according to you are named differently and exclusively just in Indore? Let us know from your observation which other words must go into our Indore Food Dictionary.
