In a petition filed recently by a law student, the said student sought for the court’s direction to the state government for framing policy, regulation, or legislation to control overexploitation of groundwater.
Now, Indore Municipal Corporation has submitted the reply on the petition stating that the corporation hasn’t been granting building permission for a roof area of more than 200 square feet without installation of a rainwater harvesting system and that these buildings were frequently checked by the civic body and administrative officials.
Furthermore, in its reply, IMC stated that a large number of people have installed rainwater harvesting system in their houses because of promotion, and 6.25% rebate in property tax for installation of the system to discharge groundwater for it.
IMC prohibited digging of borewell within city limit and took strict action with the help of district administration and police against those, who are found involved in it.
In addition to this, the corporation has also undertaken a public awareness campaign by Wetland Talab Mitra. As a part of the campaign, they encourage public support for recharging the water resources within its limits. With all these efforts and public awareness, the city is now eyeing to become the number one city with the highest number of rainwater installation.
Concluding the reply, IMC stated that they have taken adequate and necessary steps for implementation of rainwater harvesting system and recharging of existing water resources in the public interest.
