Basant Panchami in India or Vasant Panchami is a festival celebrated to welcome the spring season. Here Basant Means “Spring” and Panchami stands for “ the fifth day”, it occurs on the fifth day after Lunar of Magh month. On this day worshiping goddess Saraswathi is a major part of the tradition, According to book “Brahma Vaivarta Puran”, Sri Krishna granted Goddess Saraswati a boon that she will be worshipped on Basant Panchami.  It also believed it was a Birthday of Goddess Saraswati. Decorating temples with Yellow clothes and flowers and dress in Yellow clothes is also a part of the celebration.  Interestingly there are many facts associated with this festival.

The story behind, it goes back to the time of Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya whom the Dargah was named.  The Saint was immensely saddened because of the sudden death of his nephew, his follower Hazrat Amir Khusrau, longed to see him smile again. Once Khusrau saw a group of women dressed in yellow, carrying mustard flowers, he asked them the reason. He then dressed up in yellow saree and carrying mustard flowers went to see the saint, the effort of his disciple makes him smile finally. Since then the celebration started.

Women and children are dressed up in yellow with garlands of yellow marigold flowers and play Holi. Shantinekatan University was set up by famous Bengal poet Rabindranath Tagore.
