    Delhi is Getting India’s FIRST AIR TRAIN! All Delhi Airport Terminals to Be Connected by 2022

    Passengers will soon get an air train facility at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi National Airport. This will make it easier for passengers to reach from one terminal to another and will also save time. Air trains can run at Delhi Airport by the middle of 2022. This entire facility may cost up to Rs 2500 crore. Shuttle bus service is currently available at Delhi Airport.

    Currently, only 3 countries Chicago, Shanghai and Frankfurt have air trains, the air train in India will enable 100 million passengers to fly every year.

    The Air Train and Automated Passenger Mover will be started at Delhi Airport by mid-2022. After the expansion of Terminal 1 and the fourth runway is ready, IGI Airport will be able to fly 100 million passengers every year.

    Delhi International Airport Private Limited (DIAL) believes that it will not be possible to bring such a large number of passengers only by shuttle bus service.

    According to an official, “We are in talks with a Singapore consultant for this and after that it will be decided that any other facility can be started for the airport apart from a tram or elevated train.”

    T-1, T-2 and T3 are the three busiest terminals, of which T-3 is the busiest terminal. More than 50 thousand passengers travel daily from one terminal to another at Delhi Airport. They have to use auto, taxi or private means to travel.

    Sources said that IGI will become the largest airport in the country after the current expansion project of the airport is completed in 2022. Under this project, Air Train and Automated Passenger Movers (APM) will be started. The air train is expected to start by June 2022.

    Traffic between T-1’s extension and Terminal-3 will be made much easier through air trains and APMs. Like we mentioned, shuttle bus service is currently used to go from one terminal to another. Indira Gandhi International Airport is in the next phase of expanding its infrastructure. It is expected to be completed in 3 years. With this, the airport will have a capacity of 100 million people every year. At present only three countries- Chicago, Shanghai and Frankfurt have air trains.

    In another first, IGI Airport has also introduced a biometric enabled seamless travel (BEST) system at Terminal-3 from September. Under this, passengers get entry with the help of face recognition technology. Passengers are not required to show identity cards everywhere including airport entry, security checks and aircraft boarding.
