It was Munna Bhai MBBS that gave Indian pop culture one of the most iconic duos of all time, namely, Munna and Circuit. The story revolves around Murli Prasad Sharma aka Munna Bhai, a Mumbai-based goon pretending to be a doctor who finds himself engulfed in chaos when he decides to become a real one and enters a medical college. The movie has won a National Award for Best Popular film in which Rajkumar Hirani made a directorial debut. The film featured Sanjay Dutt, Arshad Warsi, Gracy Singh, Boman Irani and Jimmy Shergill among others.

Qarib Qarib Single is a story which revolves around Yogi and Jaya. They meet on an online dating website called AbTakSinglle.com and embark on an adventurous journey to meet Yogi’s former girlfriends., This light-hearted romantic comedy is drected by Tanuja Chandra and features Irrfan Khan, Parvathy Thiruvothu, Neha Dhupia, Isha Sharvani, Brijendra Kala and Luke Kenny among others.
CRIMINAL JUSTICE – DISNEY+HOTSTAR
The story of Criminal Justice revolves around a cab driver who faces his worst nightmare when he wakes up next to the dead body of one his passengers. All the evidence points towards him, but he has no memory of committing the crime. The storyline is about whether he can prove his innocence or is he actually guilty? The series is directed by Tigmanshu Dhulia and features Vikrant Massey in lead role alongside Pankaj Tripathi, Jackie Shroff, Anupriya Goenka and Mita Vashisht.
DREAM GIRL – ZEE5
Dream Girl is directed by Raaj Shaandilyaa and features Ayushmann Khurana who plays the role of Karam Singh. Karam lands a well-paying job at a call centre, thanks to his exceptional talent of impersonating female voices. However, soon this boon turns into bane, when his clients become obsessed with his female voice. The movie features Nushrat Bharucha, Annu Kapoor, Vijay Raaz, Abhishek Banerjee and Nidhi Bisht. According to IMDB, what makes this movie more interesting is that no voiceover artist was used to dub Ayushmann Khurrana’s female voice. The actor himself imitated it.
PARASITE – AMAZON PRIME VIDEO
The Oscar-winning movie, Parasite is available to stream on Amazon Prime. This South Korean movie revolves around a wealthy and an impoverished family who cross paths, when greed and class discrimination overpowers the latter’s desires.The movie is directed by Bong Joon Hoo and is one of the highest-grossing South Korean films. The movie took home four major awards – Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and Best International Feature Film.
A HIDDEN LIFE – DISNEY+ HOTSTAR
Palme d’Or winning director Terrence Malick’s new film A Hidden Life is also among the new shows and movies on Disney+ Hotstar. The film is about an unsung hero, Franz Jägerstätter, who refused to fight for the Nazis in World War II. Although the Austrian farmer is faced with the threat of execution for treason, his unwavering beliefs and his love for wife Fani and their three children keep his spirit alive. This movie was nominated for Cannes Film Festival’s most prestigious honour.
KARWAAN – AMAZON PRIME VIDEO
He has predominantly worked in South Indian movies so far, but Dulquer Salmaan gave a promising performance in Bollywood’s Karwaaan alongside Irrfan Khan and Mithila Palkar. It is a story of three extremely different people coming together due to a mix-up and an untimely death. With Irrfan Khan’s perfectly timed comic bursts, Karwaaan is definitely a feel-good film. One that is deeper than the bickering, humour and chaos we see in this film. If not anything, watch it for the lovely shots of South India, since we can’t really travel.
LEILA- NETFLIX
Probably one of the best performances of Huma Qureshi’s career, Leila is a dystopian drama series. The series is based on journalist Prayaag Akbar’s 2017 novel of the same name. The series is set in a futuristic Indian city, where people are forced to bow down to the rules of religion and community. The plot follows Qureshi as Shalini in her quest to find her missing daughter, Leila. The series starts off on a great note and holds your attention but falls flat towards the end. It’s still worth the binge if you’re a Qureshi fan.
O KADHAL KANMANI – AMAZON PRIME VIDEO
Written, directed and produced by Mani Ratnam, O Kadhal Kanmani, better known as OK Kanmani, is a heartwarming modern-age love story of a couple who have different goals in life, don’t believe in marriage and start living together before deciding to go their separate ways. The film stars Dulquer Salmaan and Nithya Menen in the lead roles and really strikes a chord with millennial cinephiles.
EL CANDIDATO – AMAZON PRIME VIDEO
Directed by Mexican director Jaime Reynoso and helmed by Peter Blake, this thriller is a gripping tale of power, money, hatred and love. At the centre of it is a CIA veteran and his team, who are given the task of bringing down Mexico’s most dreaded drug trafficker. The series features Rome actor James Purefoy, alongside Joaquín Cosío, Bret Harrison, Eréndira Ibarra, José María de Tavira and Sofía Sisniega. You can catch the first season of El Candidato on Amazon Prime Video on July 17.
JOLLY LLB 2 – DISNEY+ HOTSTAR (FREE)
In Jolly LLB 2 Akshay Kumar (Jolly) plays a young lawyer, who thrives on honesty and wishes to go against the system for justice. However, in doing so he also gets caught in a couple of sticky situations. During this journey of his fight for the truth, he is also strongly supported by his wife (Huma Qureshi). It all comes down to one case, which is built up through the course of the movie. This Bollywood drama is a good entertainer to watch while working from home.
THE LUMINARIES – NETFLIX
A new addition to the roster of shows and movies on Netflix, The Luminaries is a drama limited series. Based on Eleanor Catton’s 2013 novel of the same name, this British series is set in New Zealand in 1866. It follows the life of Walter Moody, a prospector who travels far and wide to make fortune while working on goldfields. Created by BBC One, this one features Eve Hewson, Eva Green and Himesh Patel, of Yesterday, EastEnders and The Aeronauts Fame.
