Compared to particulate matters a year ago, Indore’s air is much cleaner now as PM has fallen by over 5 per cent this year; the credit for which goes to the improved waste management and a lid on open burning.
Waste minimization and management coupled with regular cleaning of roads through mechanised sweeping has made a difference to city’s air, that may improve further with the use of upgraded fuel Bharat Stage 6.
What worked out in yielding such good results was an action plan to control air pollution, effective waste management and non-stop cleanliness drive. The amount of dust has significantly reduced in the air because of the cleaner roads. In addition to that, the cleaning which takes place at night also amounts to keeping road clear the next day.
Particulate Matter 10 (PM10) and Particulate Matter 2.5 (PM2.5) have dropped by 8.33 per cent and 5 per cent respectively in 2019 as against a year ago, claimed the board. So, if we succinct it, the average level of PM 2.5 in 2019 stood at around 37 as against 39 a year ago, while PM 10 was recorded at 77 as against 84.
The data was studied and collected from three manual stations- Sanwer Road, Kothari market and Vijay Nagar – in city; with Vijay Nagar being crowned with the lowest pollution.
Although, the air quality has improved but it can further improve if vehicular emission will be taken care of. Since it is a time taking process, it might take a while but once that happens, air quality will improve further.
