Our BRTS Indore has been selected for International Sustainable Transport Award 2014 along with three other city transports from across the world including Buenos Aires, Argentina; BRTS Indore, India; Lanzhou, China; and Suwon, South Korea. But has this new transport system really paid its people as good as the government expected prior to the launch of its idea.
The Indore BRTS project started in 2007 under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM). BRTS, ventured by AICTSL, became operational from 10th may 2013 and was initially launched to envisage the city with rapid bus transport system, as the name in itself suggests. No wonder the ibuses have really patched a mark to buoy the trait of nascent in the city. The plan of low floored, air conditioned buses running at the speed of 26km/hr, where earlier it marked 14kmph, has come up well to the Indorians. No wonder it has allured enough hoi polloi, who refrained from city buses until now, to prefer using them. The low rates of the well equipped buses are another good reason to applaud the new venture by the government, engaging around 70,000 passengers on its route every day. But is that all looking good enough from the other side of the road, literally?
Apart from the free moving and the healthy bus travel, BRTS has lodged Indore citizens with acute congested alleys. The 11.7km stretched wide Ahilya Path is broad enough to give a two way to the ibuses on its path but the adjacent lanes left at either sides of it seem to mash up the idea of free lane for private transport. With the total investment of a massive, powered by Government of India and the World Bank, all that the rapid transportation could curb is previous city buses on streets, giving rise to the new age of ibuses, but at the same time the millions invested have actually been dumped with the concrete of the lane leaving Indore with a utopian notion of the BRTS plan.

With the increasing complaints of the passengers regarding threats from four wheelers on the lane, the idea of free lane seems to waver in vain. Undeterred from all the other sets of chaos that the system has managed to bring up, the introduction of the Urban Transportation Plan has surely lead a lot of employment via the traffic security personnel in the city. This could be considered as one of its major turn towards Urbanisation.
In lieu of all the issues in the world, BRTS has been the only possible concept bringing the two opposition political parties to deem in the same track. Still hoping to get the plan right and in favour of its contenders, government is looking forward to introduce foot over bridges making it easier for pedestrians while checking on roadside accidents at the same time. Also a new tender has got on float on December 12th to permit rented bicycles with the usher of 30 bike stations in the city. The idea is to promote use of cycles as an alternative to private fuel vehicles, blazing the new Indore rising smart and healthy.
The most awaited question of Indoreans to be answered by the government is that how the issue wheeling under ibuses would be resolved and if the tax paid by the local hides would ever grant them its reward in the name of rapid transport and yet free lanes. Hopefully, the right response from the government could possibly have Indore’s accolade at its nomination in the 2014 International Awards.
