Indore HD got a chance to interact with Zakir Khan, one of India’s most promising Stand-up Comedian, who performed in Indore on 11th Of November, 2016. Not many of us know that Zakir Khan is also a Poet, a Sitaar player and has done Radio Scripts in the past. A true blue Indori at heart, he took the city by storm with his punchy one liners, amazingly timed gigs and kick-ass jokes that left audiences laughing like mad. Here’s an excerpt from the exclusive interview team Indore HD had with him.
Indore HD: It was amazing having you here in the city, where you have born and brought up. So how was it performing at your home town?
Zakir: The energy this city has is beyond comparison. It is always fun to perform at your home town and it gives you a certain warm welcome again and it brews all the old memories back in front of your eyes. So yes, being here again after so much gap is an awesome feeling.
Indore HD: So how comedy started for you?
Zakir: When I moved to Delhi, I wanted to socialize in the initial days and this was the thing I started doing.
Indore HD: What is your biggest show till date?
Zakir: This was the biggest things I have performed till date, here in Indore. In tier two cities, the max we manage is about 400-450 but here, it was 800! The tickets were sold out before two weeks of the date of the performance. The emotional investment of performing in your own city was overwhelming, so yes, Indore is my biggest show till date!
Indore HD: How long you have been in this field?
Zakir: As a writer, it’s been total of 8 years. I have worked with Radio for 4 years and it’s been total of 5 years now in comedy.
Indore HD: So do you use typical Indori slangs and one liners in your gigs?
Zakir: Yes I do that but I need to make sure that I’m doing it to an extent, where everyone gets the punch of it. Using typical Indori slangs is always fun!
Indore HD: Describe yourself in three words.
Zakir: I would love to describe myself as Hardworking, Consistent while Being Grounded. I believe that talent cannot be arrogant and one needs to be consistent in his work in able to perform at his best. A humble attitude is what wins the heart of your fans and followers.
Indore HD: How does it feel to be one of the top 10 comedians? Do you consider yourself a comedian or your just speak your heart out?
Zakir: My father always told me to be a big man in life, so what I basically do, is put my effort to it, so being a comedian is my way! Bhiya, apni to hai agrawal sweets! Abhi gulaab jaamun chal riye hai to aan do. Iska matlab ye ni hai ki dahi bade ban ni riye hai, jalebiya tali ni ja ri hai. Ho sab riya hai yaha! Kal wo chala to wo pel denge! I’m not married to any art form.
Indore HD: What’s your favourite one liner joke?
Zakir: Well, if you have seen my gig where I was once travelling and while I was boarding the flight, I saw a girl sitting right next to the window seat of mine. I asked her that’s not her seat and as all beautiful girls, she refused to take it on the first go. So when the airhostess came and told her that her seat is the same, but at the next row, she asked me – “Kya aap frequent flyer hai? To which I replied – “Nahi, mujhe apni kismet pe bharosa hai!”
Indore HD: Who’s your favourite comedian, beside yourself?!
Zakir: I think I have learnt a LOT from many people but I would like to take two names here – Varun Grover and Anubhav Pal.
Indore HD: You do a lot of gigs on girls and boys alike, but if you have to define a perfect date, how would you do that?
Zakir: See, a place, thing or any other location per say cannot be perfect. Perfect are the people who are going to make a date together. If there’s a spark between two people with the right chemistry, then that human to human connection will be the same at chai ki gumti or a five start hotel.
Indore HD: Any message to Indori Janta?
Zakir: “Dekho bhai passion par bojh na bano.” Evaluate what you want in life and follow what your heart aspires to be. If a person is good at something, eventually he will end up in that field.
